Chichá or chichá-do-cerrado, pau-rei and amendoim-de-macaco is a tree native to the Brazilian cerrado, it belongs to the Malvaceae family and is quiet large. His braches can be reaching a height of 8 to 25 meters. While its wood is rather heavy it still isn’t known to be very resistant. The seeds are cylindrical and rounded with a black skin that comes off as they dry. They germinate in 30 to 40 days if planted immediately after being harvested. The seedlings grow quickly in both sun and shade. They start fruiting in 6 to 7 years. After it produces the annual reddish fruits that contain nuts when opened, they are eaten by humans and natural wildlife because they have a tasty kernel, being eaten either fresh or roasted. It is a fast-growing pioneer plant and therefore ideal for reforestation. It tolerates dry and rocky terrain while withstanding low temperatures below 0.
The crown is rounded when the plant is isolated and can reach down until the ground which makes it a relatively unique sight in that circumstance. The leaves are large, trilobed (with three jagged edges), deciduous (they fall off in winter) and tomentose (covered in hairs) on the underside. The flowers appear in conical, terminal panicles. The name of the fruit, called xixá (not to be confused with the name of the tree, which is Chichá), is an indigenous term meaning “Fruit like a hand or closed fist”.
