Its use as a divine medicinal plant, whose name is identical to Sage (borrowed from the Latin Sálvia, which has the same meaning) is based on the Latin salvus (whole, healing, healthy) and dates back to antiquity. Hence Sálvia Officinalis has been used since ancient times for such things as warding off evil, snakebites, increasing women's fertility and more. In past centuries, it was also used for hair care, insect bites, wasp stings, nervous conditions, mental conditions, oral preparations for inflammation of the mouth, tongue, throat and to reduce fevers.

John Gerard's Herball states that the sacred spirit of Sage is good for the head and brain, quickens the senses and memory, strengthening the sinews, restoreth health to those that have palsy and takes away shakey trembling of the members.

However, the doctors and healers of the Middle Ages and early modern times also valued sage for other reasons. Paracelsus, Hildegard von Bingen, Lonicerus and Matthiolus used it for acute fevers, urinary tract problems, colic, colds and toothache. The holy plant was used in particular to treat red dysentery and was said to have a disinfectant and preservative effect. The rooms in which seriously ill patients were kept were cleaned by burning sage leaves on charcoal.

 

Sage used to be one of the remedies used to help pregnant women. The famous London midwife Mrs. Jane Sharp discovered and recommended in her 1671 birth manual 'The Midwives Book' or the 'Whole Art of Midwifery' that a pregnant woman should strengthen her body every morning with an ale flavored with sage. Hippocrates had also used sage as a uterine remedy.

 

The antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent effects of Sálvia are traditionally known.
